I developed a paper-based diagnostic kit for two dry eye indicators in tears. The use of two indicators significantly increases the test accuracy. Since dry eye has multiple causes with no effective treatment, early diagnosis is the key to prevent this disease to progression. My in-home dry eye diagnostic invention can benefit society in the following areas:

  1. Point of Care: The dry eye test can easily be used at home for personalized eye care.
  2. Innovation: This is the first dry eye diagnosis kit targeting two relevant indicators.
  3. Accuracy: The use of two indicators make the tear testing more accurate.
  4. Low-cost: This paper-based method can be manufactured at a large scale with relatively low cost (below $1 per test)
  5. Easy to use: The tear sample can be obtained at home from contact lenses and the tear samples can be tested immediately or refrigerated/frozen at home for future testing.
