Brandon Michael Palmen
Rochester, Minnesota
Age 19
At age 15, Brandon read a medical article about gene therapy and was so fascinated that he called the author, Dr. Stephen Russell, who worked nearby at the Mayo Clinic. Reluctantly, Dr. Russell agreed to let Brandon work in the lab. Brandon worked on weekends and after school and more than a year later he had developed a method by which a protein can be added to the surface of a measles vaccine virus particle so that it can be quickly and conveniently targeted to attack cancer cells.
