The rise in storage costs for modern high-resolution medical images, such as CTs, MRIs, and X-rays, poses a resource challenge within the healthcare domain.  My invention, CompaCT, is a new way to improve the compression of medical images. Images can be processed by applying filtering techniques to the pixels, which can dramatically improve compression power.  CompaCT applies a new reorganization technique to find patterns in the pixels of medical scans. Evaluation results demonstrate that CompaCT is 37% more space-efficient than industry-standard compression systems, like JPEG2000, and 142% more space-efficient than uncompressed data while still retaining perfect image recovery after decompression.
